In March we bought a dozen point of lay chickens from an organic farm just outside Exeter and housed them in our luxury chicken pad in Middle Barn field.   We built them what we hope is a fox and polecat proof run, with a two meter high enclosure and a 400 square meter day paddock so that they can browse and scratch about. The eggs are organic, and plentiful, averaging about 10 a day, with a decent number of ‘double-yokers’. Basically the eggs cost about £1.20 each if you write down the shed over 12 months and take feed etc into account, so it’s a bit of a turnip financially, but the eggs are great. The eggs are on sale to our guests at £2 for a half dozen and £3.80 for a dozen. That’s a bit more than supermarket eggs but we think they’re worth it.
